Tips for Looking After Your Bathroom

Here at Hortons we love bringing your dream bathrooms to life. We also know it’s important to share hints and tips for helping to keep your new bathroom looking good, staying clean all while ensuring no damage is done to your new furniture and facilities.

Choosing The Right Cleaner

On the market today there are so many different cleaning products, it can become a minefield when trying to decide which one you should buy. When it comes to the bathroom, many people would choose the standard bathroom cleaners believing that these would be your best options for keeping your bathroom clean. However, you might be surprised to find out that these can actually damage your new bathroom. The chemicals in these cleaners can destroy your bathroom and overtime will cause serious damage. The only surface that you are able to use these types of cleaners on is ceramics as it is a hardy material which will be able to withstand the chemicals that are present in the cleaners.

With all other surfaces we recommend using a dry or damp cloth, making sure that it is not wet and if necessary, adding a bit of washing up liquid. This can be used on all surfaces and will help keep everything clean and tidy while maintaining your new bathroom. You may also use diluted white vinegar and water as this is a much gentler solution to help with getting rid of limescale.

When cleaning the toilet, we recommend only bleaching the bowl. Getting bleach on the hinges or seat can result in a lot of damage. The hinges can become rusted and the seat become discoloured. Ensuring that the bleach therefore stays in the bowl and the seat and lid stays open while bleaching can reduce this issue arising.

Never Ignore Leaks and Puddles

Always make sure to keep an eye out for leaks and puddles as this could be a sign that something is not working properly. If you notice a leak or a puddle, try to identify where it is coming from and aim to get it fixes as soon as you can. While waiting for repairs, try to keep the surrounding area as dry as possible to help avoid damage to the surrounding furniture.

Wipe Up Spills Immediately

Small spills can often be overlooked, thinking that you will just clean it later, however toothpaste, mouthwash, makeup or hair products, can cause damage to your bathroom surfaces. We recommend that you clean up any spill immediately to keep your bathroom looking as good as new.

Alongside this we also recommend you clean down any water that is sitting on furniture. Leaving this can cause staining and swelling so making sure everything is nice and dry will help prolong the life of your bathroom.

Suitable Ventilation

Having good ventilation is very important in every bathroom. Poor ventilation can lead to mould and mildew growing which once established can be very hard to get rid of and can cause damage to your bathroom. With most bathroom installation we recommend extractor fans to be installed as they remove the moisture from the air in the bathroom and pushed it outside increasing the overall ventilation in your bathroom. These can also be more energy efficient in the winter to save having the vent your windows while having your heating on.

Opening your windows to the vent setting may also be something to help ventilate your bathroom, but we recommend you speaking to your installer about this as they would be best to advise whether this would be suitable for your bathroom.

Note, if you do have the fan on, do not open the window as well.  A lot of people assume this is a double whammy to prevent steam, but it is inefficient. You wouldn’t have the air conditioning on in a car and then open the window now would you…

Be Aware of High Footfall

Although you might not think about it straight away, your bathroom is one of the busiest rooms in your house. Therefore, with lots of people coming and going, it could be easy to scratch, kick or chip furniture which if left could expose it to condensation resulting in further damage. While bathroom furniture is robust to get the most out of it and keep it looking newer for longer, we suggest not wearing shoes in the bathroom. This can help reduce the damage done to furniture and prolong its life.
