Working on this project was a pleasure, as the family often have visitors with reduced mobility. Creating an accessible bathroom that offered comfort, safety and independence was therefore the main focus.
The bathroom needed to include a level access shower area that was large enough for a wheelchair. It also needed carefully selected products to help users maintain as much independence as possible.
We started with a level access wet deck that was wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair. The shower area also incorporates a built-in bench, allowing a wheelchair user to transfer onto the seat before using the shower.
The smart shower is controlled by a remote, meaning the user can switch it on before entering the shower area. This provides greater control and avoids getting wet while reaching for the controls.
The basin was made bespoke so it could be installed at an appropriate height for the user. Additional storage was also incorporated, providing easy access to everyday essentials while making the most of the available space.
The WC is a bidet toilet, which can be operated using a remote control. This gives the user greater independence and removes the need for assistance when using the toilet.
The bath was fitted into bespoke boxing to create a useful ledge. This allows someone with reduced mobility to use the ledge to transfer onto the bath before using the grips to lower themselves into the water.
Creating an accessible bathroom doesn’t mean compromising on style. We wanted this room to feel welcoming and homely rather than clinical, so we used lighting around the bath to add warmth and visual interest.
The lighting is also motion activated, giving it a practical purpose. When someone enters the bathroom during the night, it provides enough light to see without creating the harsh brightness of the main bathroom lighting.
The finished bathroom combines accessibility, independence and thoughtful design, creating a practical space that works for the whole family and their visitors.
